Requirements
- Experience building backend systems or platforms that other engineers depend on and understanding the implications of software becoming part of another system’s critical path.
- Experience building, operating, or working deeply with experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management, or progressive-rollout systems in a large engineering environment.
- Experience taking ambiguous engineering problems, forming technical direction, and helping other engineers move toward an outcome.
- Experience building internal platforms or capabilities and driving adoption by earning the trust and usage of other teams.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including experience designing reliable backend systems and reasoning about scalability, availability, consistency, and failure modes.
- Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing sufficient to understand how experimentation data is generated, moved, and consumed.
- Familiarity with experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to transfer them between programming languages.
Responsibilities
- Provide senior technical leadership across the backend systems behind Canva’s experimentation programme.
- Evolve the platform used to set up experiments, target users, expose variants, and measure outcomes safely and intuitively.
- Help develop a platform that reinforces good experimentation practices, surfaces signals faster, and alerts early when important guardrails are affected.
- Explore automation of the analysis process using artificial intelligence to help teams learn faster and iterate.
- Take ownership of significant technical problems, work with senior leaders across Canva, and shape the platform’s future direction with the teams building it.
- Collaborate broadly across Canva’s engineering and data science organisations.
- Build shared experimentation capabilities used across the company to configure and launch experiments and support data-driven rollout decisions.
Desired Qualifications
- Direct experience designing or building experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management, or rollout infrastructure inside a large technology company or for a platform vendor.
- A background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering.
- Experience building feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrail systems.
- Comfort with experimentation and statistics sufficient to work closely with data scientists.
