    JOB  DETAILS

    What you’ll do

As part of the Financial and Economic Analysis team within Strategic Finance, you will be responsible for but not limited to:

Conduct modelling and analysis to assess the impact of policy proposals and program/service design initiatives.
Work with business process owners and data custodians to source, cleanse and connect data.
Analyse cost and activity data to establish standard unit costs, identify cost drivers, and develop system-wide cost models to forecast costs and assess policy or practice changes.
Contribute to in-depth analysis on priority issues, including cost-benefit analysis of reforms, and provide advice to stakeholders.
Document and communicate methodology and results to technical and non-technical audiences and support the manager and broader branch/division goals.

The Financial and Economic Analysis team sits within Reporting and Analytics, under Strategic Finance at the Department of Communities and Justice. The team plays a key role in supporting the Department by delivering financial analysis and building costing/economic models that inform critical decision-making across the organisation.

We operate in a dynamic environment that balances a mix of annual BAU responsibilities alongside a variety of ad hoc projects that evolve with the Department’s needs. We pride ourselves on being a highly collaborative team where knowledge sharing and working together is central to how we operate — whether tackling day-to-day work or delivering complex analysis, you will never be working alone.

    What we’re looking for

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and quick-thinking problem-solver with a genuine interest in working with financial and operational data. You will bring solid Excel skills and an eagerness to learn and develop your capability in tools such as Alteryx, SQL and Power Query as part of the team’s broader analytical work. Equally important is your ability to communicate effectively — this role involves engaging with colleagues and stakeholders to support model development, troubleshoot issues, and help present findings clearly.

Whether you come from a finance, economics or data background, what matters most is your curiosity, attention to detail, proactive attitude, willingness to take on new challenges, and collaborative approach to getting things done — along with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
